Geita Gold, Kagera Sugar return to Premier League

DAR ES SALAAM: GEITA Gold and Kagera Sugar have secured promotion back to the Mainland Premier League opening an unassailable lead at the top of the Championship table with two matches remaining in the season following decisive victories yesterday. Geita Gold confirmed their return to the top flight with a 3-1 win over Songea United at Nyankumbu Stadium in Geita. Maulid Shabani scored a first-half brace before Richard Ng’ondya added the third goal to seal the victory. Kagera Sugar also sealed promotion after defeating KenGold 3-0 at Kaitaba Stadium in Kagera. Charles Luhende, Kassim Fekha and Obrey Chirwa were on target for Kagera Sugar. The results ensured both clubs opened an unassailable gap over the chasing teams with two rounds of matches left before the end of the season. Geita Gold lead the Championship standings with 71 points from 28 matches, while Kagera Sugar are second with 68 points. Mbeya Kwanza, who are third with 60 points, can no longer catch the top two sides and are now set to compete in the promotion playoffs alongside Polisi Tanzania, who are level on points but trail on goal difference. Under the competition format, the playoff winner will face a Premier League side that survives the relegation playoff battle for a place in next season’s Mainland Premier League campaign.
