Nicosia EU meeting sees first freedom of navigation sanctions imposed on Iran

The European Union has officially activated its new freedom of navigation sanctions framework, targeting Iranian entities and individuals for interfering with maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the decision following a defense meeting in Nicosia, citing Tehran's use of drones and other tactics to obstruct this critical global waterway as unacceptable. This marks the first time the bloc has utilized these specific punitive measures to protect international shipping lanes. Beyond Middle Eastern security, the meeting addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Kallas noting that Hungary has dropped its opposition to releasing billions in military aid funds. EU ministers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow, emphasizing that continued military and economic support is essential to weaken Russia's war effort. Furthermore, the bloc is intensifying its efforts to monitor and intercept vessels associated with Russia's shadow fleet to bolster maritime security.
