The number of recognised vulnerable, landslip-prone locations across the Nilgiris district has come down from 283 to 156, said District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru.
The Collector said that the landslip-prone locations identified earlier had been mapped by Revenue Department officials and not on a “scientific” basis. Over the past year, technical experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) had been asked to conduct a detailed survey, and they identified 156 landslip-prone areas in the district, she said.
The Nilgiris district administration said that 29 zonal teams had been formed ahead of the onset of the Southwest monsoon. The Collector said the teams would remain on alert round the clock to respond to emergencies. A total of 456 emergency relief shelters have been identified and kept ready in case evacuations become necessary. More than 3,500 people across the district have been trained to respond during emergencies.
Local residents have been urged to alert the district administration’s emergency control room in case of emergencies through the toll free number 1077.
