Armenia’s Pashinyan wins election but pro-Russian opposition polls strongly

Armenia’s governing Civil Contract party, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has secured a parliamentary majority following a national election. With nearly 50% of the vote, the administration maintains its mandate to pursue a strategic pivot toward Western partnerships and away from its traditional reliance on Russia. Despite the victory, the results highlight a polarized political landscape, as two major pro-Russian opposition blocs captured a combined 31% of the vote.

Pashinyan’s administration now faces the complex challenge of navigating a lasting peace agreement with Azerbaijan and normalizing relations with Turkey. Because the party failed to reach a two-thirds supermajority, it lacks the legislative power to unilaterally amend the constitution, a key requirement for the peace process demanded by Baku.
