Ilukuptiye Pannasekara, made the remarks during celebrations marking the birth anniversary of the global Buddhist leader, born about 2,599 years ago, as well as the 106th anniversary of the country’s first Buddhist temple, the Golden Buddha House in Upanga, Dar es Salaam. Rev Pannasekara said Tanzania continues to stand out as a symbol of religious tolerance, noting that Buddhists in the country freely practice their faith while maintaining strong and cordial relations with other religious groups and the government. “We have received tremendous cooperation from other religious communities, which has enabled Buddhists in Tanzania to live in peace and happiness,” he said. Speaking at the event, Sangu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting all religious groups without discrimination, as part of efforts to safeguard peace, unity and national cohesion. He said religious institutions play a vital role in promoting moral values, social development and peaceful coexistence across the country. Tanzania is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most stable nations, with religious harmony remaining a key pillar of its peace and development agenda.
