Study: Key to kids' academic success cooperation between home and kindergarten
When it comes to supporting the academic skills of 5-year-old children, parents' beliefs and cooperation with preschool teachers are more important than the number of learning activities carried out at home, according to a doctoral dissertation defended at Tallinn University.
A recent doctoral study from Tallinn University suggests that the academic performance of five-year-olds is less dependent on the volume of home-based learning activities than previously assumed. Instead, researchers found that a child's early math and language skills are more significantly influenced by parental attitudes and the strength of the partnership between families and preschool educators. By analyzing data from over 500 children, the study indicates that formal early childhood education systems may effectively bridge gaps in development. The results suggest that in environments with high-quality, standardized preschool curricula, the professional instruction provided in the classroom plays a dominant role in cognitive growth. While home engagement remains valuable for other reasons, it appears that the structured support offered by qualified teachers is the primary driver of academic readiness in this context.
The findings challenge the common parental anxiety that constant home-based educational drills are essential for school readiness, highlighting the critical importance of collaborative relationships between parents and teachers.
