IRINGA: T HE MINISTRY of Health, through its Emergency and Disaster Management Department, has intensified training aimed at strengthening emergency medical services, accident response, critical care, and preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks, including Ebola, at Frelimo District Hospital in Iringa Region on June 8, 2026. The training brings together health workers from Emergency Medical Departments (EMD), Intensive Care Units (ICU), and ambulance services drawn from district hospitals across the region. The initiative is focused on improving the capacity of frontline health workers to respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies that require urgent and coordinated medical intervention. Health officials said the programme is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that hospitals are better prepared to handle a wide range of emergencies, including road traffic accidents, severe injuries, critical illnesses, and potential outbreaks of highly contagious diseases such as Ebola. Unlike routine classroom learning, the training is being conducted through practical, hands-on sessions within real hospital settings. This approach allows health workers to assess service delivery systems on the ground, identify gaps in emergency response, and apply immediate improvements where necessary. The exercise is also enhancing teamwork and coordination among medical personnel working in emergency units. Participants are refreshing their clinical skills and gaining new techniques in managing critically ill patients, especially those requiring rapid life-saving interventions in high-pressure situations. According to the Ministry, continuous capacity building remains a key pillar in improving the quality of healthcare services in the country. Officials emphasized that in emergency medicine, timely response can make the difference between life and death, hence the need for well-trained and well-coordinated health teams. Participants in the training expressed appreciation for the programme, noting that it has strengthened their practical skills and boosted their confidence in handling complex emergency cases. They also highlighted the importance of sharing experiences with colleagues from different hospitals, which has broadened their understanding of real-life clinical challenges.
