Heavy rain to continue in Kerala; red alert for three districts on June 9

The heavy rain that has been lashing Kerala for the past few days is likely to continue for two more days, triggered by the active monsoon conditions prevailing in the Arabian Sea and the State. A red alert warning of extreme heavy rainfall in the range of 204 mm in 24 hours has been forecast for Kasaragod, Kannur, and Kozhikode districts on Tuesday.

An orange alert has been issued for Malappuram and Wayanad districts, where a very heavy spell of rain is likely. The rest of the State, except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha districts, has been put on yellow alert, warning of isolated heavy rains. Holiday has been declared for educational institutions in the districts where red alert has been issued on Tuesday.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an upper air cyclonic circulation persist over the east-central Arabian Sea off the south Konkan coast at 5.8 km above mean sea level. This, along with a shear zone that runs between 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level, is likely to influence the monsoon rains.

A fishermen warning has also been issued, advising them not to venture into the sea off the coast of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep area until June 10 as squally weather with a wind speed of 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off Kerala and Karnataka coast and over Lakshadweep area.

Meanwhile, Cherthala in Alappuzha, Peerumade in Idukki, and Chalakudy in Thrissur recorded the highest rainfall of 90 mm each during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, followed by Munakkal in Thrissur (80 mm), Thodupuzha in Idukki, Kodungallur in Thrissur, and Kunnathanam in Pathanamthitta with 70 mm each.
