The Pahadishareef police arrested a 20-year-old house burglary offender and recovered stolen gold and silver ornaments worth about ₹26 lakh within two days of registering a case.
The accused was identified as Akumalla Baba Peer alias Baba, an AC mechanic from Housing Board Colony in Raviryala village of Maheshwaram mandal in Ranga Reddy district. He is originally from Ayyavaripally village in YSR Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.
Police said the accused was apprehended on the evening of June 7 based on technical evidence and specific information developed during the investigation.
Officers recovered 166 grams of gold ornaments, 257 grams of silver articles and a screwdriver allegedly used in the offence.
The case came to light after Nenavath Mallikarjun lodged a complaint with Pahadishareef Police on June 5. He informed police that he had locked his house and travelled with his family to his native village, Sunnapu Thanda in Kollapur, on June 2. When the family returned on the night of June 4, they found the bedroom almirah and locker broken open.
According to the complaint, stolen property included about 17 tolas of gold ornaments comprising chains, bangles, a bracelet, earrings, rings and a one-tola gold biscuit, along with silver articles including silver biscuits and a pair of silver anklets.
Police said the family also noticed that the glass panes of a ventilation opening in the pooja room had been removed, suggesting that the offender had entered the house through the ventilation during their absence.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the offence. Investigators said he would move around residential colonies during night hours looking for locked houses. After identifying a target, he would gain entry by removing ventilation glass panes and then break open almirah lockers using a screwdriver.
Police said the accused allegedly sold stolen property to unidentified persons in different parts of Hyderabad and spent the proceeds on personal expenses
