ARUSHA:RESEARCHERS , policymakers, health experts and development partners from within and outside Tanzania are expected to gather in Arusha City from June 9 to 11, 2026, for the 33rd Tanzania Annual Scientific Conference, which will focus on the future of the health sector and the role of research in improving healthcare services for citizens. Speaking to journalists in Arusha today, the Director General of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Professor Said Aboud, said the conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, academics and various health stakeholders to share research findings and discuss solutions to challenges facing the health sector in Tanzania and globally. He said the conference theme is “Universal Health Coverage: Building a Strong and Sustainable Health System Towards Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.” The theme reflects the need to strengthen health systems through scientific evidence, innovation and the use of research findings in policymaking and implementation. According to Prof, Aboud, the theme underscores the national commitment to building evidence-based and sustainable health systems, while promoting innovation and the application of research outcomes in policy decisions and development planning. The conference is expected to attract about 450 participants from Tanzania and abroad, including researchers, policymakers, academics, students, health professionals and other stakeholders in the sector. Regarding academic presentations, he said a total of 339 research abstracts have been received. Some will be presented through oral presentations, while others will be discussed in six symposia that will bring together experts for in-depth discussions on various health issues. In addition to research presentations, the conference will feature exhibitions by institutions and scientific innovators, policy dialogues, and opportunities for participants to exchange experiences and build professional networks within the health sector. Prof Aboud further noted that President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially open the conference and provide policy direction on the role of research in strengthening healthcare services in Tanzania.
