During the 'Greece 2030' conference, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis proposed utilizing unallocated Recovery Fund resources to strengthen the Greek Development Bank. He suggested that these funds should serve as capital to establish a robust public financing pillar dedicated to social housing programs for young people and middle-income families. While acknowledging recent macroeconomic improvements, Androulakis argued that the country must look beyond the crisis era and focus on long-term productivity, which he described as a national priority. He also criticized the current government's management of the Recovery Fund, labeling it a missed opportunity due to a lack of strategic planning. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to address the cost-of-living crisis, private debt, and the protection of primary residences to ensure sustainable economic growth. Finally, he linked economic success to the strengthening of institutions and the rule of law, suggesting that true development cannot occur without them.
The proposal highlights a significant policy debate regarding the strategic allocation of European recovery funds to address the urgent housing crisis and long-term economic sustainability in Greece.
