Your empty cuppa could capture carbon

Humanity has littered the sky with the refuse of fossil fuel use, releasing enough CO 2 to change the planet’s climate. We are also chucking incredible sums of carbon in the form of plastics into landfills and into the environment around (and inside of ) us. What if cleaning up one of these problems could also help clean up the other? A new study led by Ruth Ebenbauer at Aarhus University experiments with this idea by upcycling discarded polystyrene into (part of) a material

Researchers at Aarhus University have developed a novel method to repurpose discarded polystyrene, a common plastic waste, for use in carbon-capture technology. By transforming this plastic into a porous material, the team created a substrate capable of supporting amines, which act as chemical sponges for carbon dioxide. These amines effectively trap CO2 molecules from the air and can be easily released through heating or pressure changes, allowing the material to be reused. This approach addresses two environmental crises simultaneously by diverting plastic from landfills and providing a more efficient way to scrub greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The study highlights how upcycling waste can improve the sustainability and energy efficiency of current carbon-capture systems.

This research offers a dual-purpose environmental solution by turning plastic waste into a functional tool for mitigating climate change.
