Australia homes leads the world in solar. But businesses are falling behind

Australia has established itself as a global leader in residential solar adoption, with approximately 22 gigawatts of rooftop solar capacity installed across homes as of December. However, the commercial and industrial sectors have significantly lagged behind this residential boom, deploying only around 5.6 gigawatts despite their substantially higher electricity consumption compared to households. According to analysis from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, this disparity represents a major gap in the country's renewable energy transition, with businesses capturing just a quarter of the solar capacity that homes have achieved.

This imbalance highlights a critical opportunity for Australia to accelerate its clean energy goals by expanding solar adoption in the business sector, which could deliver greater emissions reductions given its higher energy demands.
